India witnessed a surge in Covid-19 cases, reaching a seven-month high with 614 new infections reported in the last 24 hours, the highest since May 21, as per updated data from the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday. The increase is attributed to the Covid sub-variant JN.1, initially detected in Kerala. The death toll reached 5,33,321, with three fatalities reported in Kerala within 24 hours.

The total Covid case tally in the country stands at 4.50 crore (4,50,05,978). The recovery rate is 98.81%, with 4,44,70,346 people having recuperated. The case fatality rate is 1.19%, and the health ministry reports the administration of 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccines in the country.

To address the situation, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya chaired a meeting emphasizing the importance of vigilance against emerging strains. He urged joint efforts between the Centre and states, proposing mock drills every three months at both levels to share best practices. States were directed to monitor and send samples to INSACOG labs for variant tracking. Mandaviya stressed the need for states to manage information dissemination and awareness.

The surge is linked to the Covid JN.1 variant, first detected in a 79-year-old woman from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Symptoms of this sub-variant include mild fever, coughing, nasal discomfort, sore throat, runny nose, facial pain or pressure, headache, and gastrointestinal issues.
