In a momentous partnership, Tata Projects has unveiled its collaboration with Micron Technology to embark on the construction of an advanced semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Sanand, Gujarat.

The union marks a pivotal achievement for Tata Projects, underscoring its prowess in spearheading substantial and sustainable infrastructure projects within India’s thriving manufacturing domain.

Situated within the expanse of the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation precinct in Chaarodi, Sanand, this project encompasses an impressive 93 acres of prime real estate.

“This enduring venture stands as a monumental milestone, representing the most substantial investment to date within the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM),” the announcement proclaimed. It further highlighted that Phase 1 of the construction will encompass a sprawling 500,000 square feet of pristine cleanroom space, strategically slated for operation by the end of 2024.

Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MU), a global leader in semiconductor technology, has unveiled its groundbreaking plans to establish an innovative DRAM and NAND assembly and testing facility, marking the first of its kind in India. This strategic initiative aims to augment Micron’s worldwide manufacturing capabilities, aligning with future market demands both domestically and internationally.

Located in Gujarat, India, the phased construction of this state-of-the-art assembly and testing facility is set to commence in 2023. The initial phase, slated for completion in late 2024, will encompass 500,000 square feet of meticulously planned cleanroom space. Micron will progressively scale up production capacity in sync with global demand dynamics. The subsequent Phase 2, mirroring the scale of Phase 1, is scheduled to kick off in the latter half of the decade.

This ambitious undertaking by Micron entails an investment of up to $825 million over the two project phases, fostering the creation of 5,000 direct employment opportunities at Micron and 15,000 additional community jobs in the coming years. Leveraging the Indian government’s “Modified Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) Scheme,” Micron is poised to receive 50% fiscal support from the Indian central government and an additional 20% incentive from the state of Gujarat, culminating in a combined investment of up to $2.75 billion. This collaborative effort will empower the project by facilitating access to critical semiconductor infrastructure and nurturing local talent development.

Micron’s President and CEO, Sanjay Mehrotra, expressed enthusiasm for India’s strides in advancing its semiconductor ecosystem, extending gratitude to the Indian government and all stakeholders who paved the way for this investment. The new assembly and testing facility in India will enable Micron to bolster its global manufacturing capabilities, serving customers not only in India but across the globe.

Micron’s strategic move aligns with its overarching strategy to meet the long-term demand projections for memory and storage solutions across diverse markets, synergizing with its extensive global assembly and testing network.

Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Cabinet Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics, and IT, lauded Micron’s investment, highlighting its transformative impact on India’s semiconductor landscape. This initiative is expected to catalyze the growth of a thriving semiconductor ecosystem while generating tens of thousands of high-tech and construction jobs.

The selection of Gujarat as the project site stems from its robust manufacturing infrastructure, conducive business environment, and a well-established pool of talent located in the SANAND Industrial Park (Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation – GIDC).

Gursharan Singh, Micron’s Senior Vice President of Global Assembly and Test Operations, expressed Micron’s commitment to leveraging its new facility for the transformation of wafers into ball grid array (BGA) integrated circuit packages, memory modules, and solid-state drives.
